ASCII Filter
Tone-mapped characters cluster where the picture is bright and thin out where it is dark, so the photo reads through the type instead of being replaced.
Live
Each character in the charset is measured for ink coverage at build time, then sorted into bands. Mapping luminance to a band rather than an index is what makes the tonal ramp smooth.
Video sources are decoded at a reduced resolution before sampling, so a full-bleed background video costs a fraction of what a naive implementation would.
